Ensure participation of indigenous peoples in decision-making at all levels: UN chief
On the occasion of 19th commemoration of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples (IDWIP) was held on Friday, August 9 at the UN Headquarters in New York, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in his message stated, 'We must ensure the participation of indigenous peoples, both women and men in decision-making at all levels. This includes discussions on accelerating action towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals and defining the post-2015 development agenda. '
The IDWIP this year was observed with the theme of IDWIP this year is “Indigenous Designs: Celebrating Stories and Cultures, Crafting our Own Future". According to the UN, IDWIP commemoration at the UN headquarters was in the form of an interactive dialogue entitled “Indigenous peoples building alliances: Honouring treaties, agreements and other constructive arrangements", will take place in the afternoon. The main aim of the observance is to promote and protect.”
The IDWIP was first pronounced by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 1994 and educational institutions were urged to organise events such as educational forums and classroom activities to gain an appreciation and a better understanding of indigenous peoples.
According to a UN agency, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP, human development is not possible where discrimination, injustice, and social exclusion prevail, and where there is a lack of recognition that all groups bring value to society with their different worldviews.
The UN has been advocating for expanding the rights, voices, participation and opportunities for indigenous peoples for inclusive development that will build communities that are more just, diverse and cohesive.
It is interesting to note that the logo for the observance is the artwork by Rebang Dewan, a Chakma boy from Bangladesh which features two ears of green leaves facing each other and cradling a globe resembling planet earth. Within the globe is a picture of a handshake against a landscape background.
