A gentleman from Nashik took a plunge into wine making in India with nothing more than a vision. Today he has a popular brand to his name and lots of grateful local employees. If the educated have the guts to try they can do wonders.
LAST WEEK we visited Nashik, some 250 kms from Mumbai mainly to visit a winery. The owner of this unit left his plum job in the Silicon Valley, USA, to set up a wine making unit in his home town, Nasihk at a time when very few wineries existed in India and none were doing well.
Wine drinking is not very popular in India and those who like the drink prefer wine imported from France and other European countries. With this background taking a plunge in this uncertain business really needed guts which this gentleman obviously had.
They produce six varieties of wines including the popular Red, White and Crystal. They arrange a conducted tour of the vineyard and the wine making unit and conclude the tour with wine testing. All this time I was under the impression that wine is made from normal edible grapes. It was good to know that there are special varieties of grapes for wine making which are cultivated under proper care. I am not giving the name of the winery and the name of the owner under request. I really appreciate the enterprising spirit of the owner and wish more and more people could establish manufacturing units to generate employment to locals and help the economy of their country of origin.

Jobs come from pebble droppers, entrepreneurs making waves, wakes, to start business ventures. The political environment must nurture them, not discourage them. Pebble droppers should be admired for the service they provide. Instead, they are envied by the few, taxed and punished by government.
