Errant service by Delhi metro calls for immediate rectification
The worst hit by the crowd were the old. As an old lady struggled to find her way in the coach, she was helpless and suffocated. The fellow passengers helped her find her way through the crowd, which was heart warming.
THE NEWS of metro trains getting delayed is not very unusual. Five to ten minutes of stoppage time of metros is something Delhiites are quite used to. But what happened on February 1, 2011 was something that perhaps very few could imagine. The metro train towards Noida City Centre arrived on platform number 1, after a time gap of 10 minutes, which is usually about 2-3 minutes.

The trains stopped for at least 5-10 minutes at every station. The ladies coach suffered the most, as more women kept on adding to the already increasing numbers. Pushing and shoving in the coach, people struggled for space to even put their feet on ground.

The worst hit by the crowd were the old. As an old lady struggled to find her way in the coach, she was helpless and suffocated. The fellow passengers helped her find her way through the crowd, which was heart warming.

The technical issue in the metro was a cause of suffering for many commuters, including office-goers and students. People were late for work and students suffered too as they would report late for their classes.

A group of men entered the ladies coach, which is an offence according to rules and regulations. They pleaded that for a single day they should be allowed to enter as they could not afford to miss this train.

Although rush during early hours of morning is something all Delhiites are very well versed with, it was indeed horrifying to see such huge number of people board the metro, causing stampede like condition.

With the metro ridership rising on a monthly basis, it is a clear proof of the increasing needs and demands of people. It is the need of a common man today, without which one’s existence is not possible. After the Blueline scare, it is the metro which people rely on.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has indeed made a lot of efforts for the comfort of its passengers by constantly introducing reforms and rules that would make the metro more passenger friendly. The introduction of new metro coaches, the ladies special coach and the more recent, multi utility touch screen pods at various stations for services like paying bills, recharge and knowing the metro schedules is commendable. But on one hand while it has fulfilled so many positive functions, it’s hard work goes waste when such technical barriers crop up, leading to a finger being pointed on DMRC’s image.

With so many essential roles to play, DMRC must not let its hard earned reputation get ruined. Such technical issues are understandable once in a while, but when it happens on a regular basis, it is a prime concern for all of us.
