Walt Disney Co. is closing operations of five ESPN ZONE restaurants due to its week economics of business. Cable sports network Controlled by Burbank, California based Disney, said in a statement that five restaurants located in Baltimore, Chicago, Las Vegas, New York and Washington will close on June 16.
ESPN Zone is a sports theme restaurants chain started 12 year ago by Disney. Apart from its five closer all other restaurants in Los Angeles and Anaheim will stay open. These are run by Anschutz Entertainment Group and Zone Enterprise.
Senior VP of the cable network Rick Alessandri said, “This was a very difficult decision to make. But it was the right decision to make.” According to Disney’s regulatory filings, each restaurant was split into three sections, a “studio grill” for dining, a “screening room” for watching ESPN sports coverage and “sports arena” for playing interactive games. ESPN would not release revenue or other financial details about the restaurant chain. World’s largest entertainment company’s shares rose 22cent to $33.37 in New York stock exchange after the announcement.
