Essential guidelines for taking photographs of illuminated buildings
When big buildings are illuminated at night from inside and outside, they provide different photogenic look than in the daylight. In an illuminated situation, their shapes and features get enhanced and they become good subjects to take photographs.

In such a situation, for a good photograph, we need to pay attention to both the exposure and colour balance right besides the standard rules of composition.

It is advisable that the wide-angle lens setting be used. Move to a higher position or move to an appropriate position to get a reasonable perspective.

So, the most important guideline is that you should include the whole building by using a wider angle lens or choosing the position very carefully by stepping back to a more reasonable viewpoint. This would provide the graphical feel of the building.

If the illumination is white, normal exposure time of 1/60 second can work. However, more exposure time would be required in case the colour of the light becomes warmer. In such a situation an exposure time of about 1/15 second would be required with a rock-still camera.

For longer exposure, use of tripod and timer click or cable release would be more appropriate. In case of absence of tripod, you can find a wall, pillar or tree to support the camera.

With a tripod, even switching to a higher ISO can be helpful for a reasonable shot in the low light situations to reduce noise or blurring.

Moreover, use your exposure compensation setting to reduce the exposure by a couple of stops when most of the area is in darkness and building is well illuminated. In case the building has a medium illumination, one stop exposure compensation will be good.

Keeping in view these guidelines, experiment with and practice photography of illuminated buildings, soon you will master the art of this kind of night photography.
