Ethiopian Airlines plane crashes near Beirut
An Ethiopian Airlines plane 737-800 with 90 people on board crashed just minutes after takeoff from Beirut International Airport into the Mediterranean Sea early Monday.
AN ETHIOPIAN airlines plane with 90 people on board crashed just minutes after takeoff from Beirut International Airport into the Mediterranean Sea early Monday. The Boeing 737-800 took off around 2:30 am (7:30 pm EST) for the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa from Beirut International Airport.
 
The airline spoke person said, among the 90 people aboard the flight, there are 51 passengers from Lebanon, 23 passengers from Ethiopia, two British nationals and one each from Turkish, French, Russian, Canadian, Syrian and Iraqi nationals. The eight crew members were Ethiopian.
 
The crash site has been identified three-and-a-half km west of the coastal village of Na'ameh. The cause of the Ethiopian plane crash was not immediately known, but the crash was likely weather-related. From Sunday it had been heavily raining and lightning in Beirut. Search and rescue operations are going on.
