Events galore in Pune, the cultural capital of Maharashtra
The cultural capital of Maharashtra Pune is famous for its love for music, films, dance, art and theatre. Now with the coming up of mall culture, these places are also booming with activity ranging from promotional events to musical events etc.
PUNE, ALSO known as the cultural capital of Maharashtra is famous for its love for music, films, dance, art and theatre. All round the year, various events, seminars, workshops and exhibitions are being organised across the length and breadth of Pune city. Now with the coming up of mall culture, these places are also booming with activity ranging from promotional events to musical events to performances by celebrities etc. Theatres and art galleries too are packed with events throughout the year.

Amongst the recently concluded events were ‘Crest Experiences’ at Shaniwar Wada where Grammy Award winning saxophonist, Emmie Watts and leading Blues harmonica player, Corky Siegel along with violin maestro Dr L Subramaniam, Kavita Krishnamurti, Ambi and Bindu Subramaniam performed to the great applause of the audience present there. It was in fact, an evening woven by the blend of classically refined fusion music intricately performed by each of the geniuses.

The Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) which kick started on January 7, 2010, has already garnered great praise and appreciation from the public for displaying cinematic exhibits in relation to bringing in a host of personalities, celebrities who are a part of the bandwagon of the cinema world. Besides this, delegates and movie buffs across the nation and abroad too are coming in each day to be a part of this grand event. Doyens of the film industry – Rajesh Khanna and Dr Shriram Lagoo are to be conferred with Lifetime Achievement Awards this year.

The Sawai Gandharva Music Festival, considered as one of the most popular mega events is another great fest held in Pune city amidst great zeal and enthusiasm. With this year being the 57th edition of the fest, starting on January 7, the programmes and performances this year have a lot to offer to music lovers coming across around India and abroad.
 
Besides the music concerts, a photography exhibition dedicated to Kirana gharana vocalists Gangubai Hangal and Pt Firoz Dastur and also music sessions by music gurus are going to be the key highlights of this year’s festival. Sarod maestro Biswajit Roy Chowdhary has already shown keen interest in performing at this world class event. Another event of the fest will be ‘Antarang’ session where music experts will conduct sessions for keen listeners of Indian classical music.
 
Renowned photographer Satish Paknikar has coordinated the exhibition. Seventy-five photographs of Hangal and Pt Dastur will be on display. Paknikar has said that while most of the people have seen photographs of vocalists being clicked while singing but this time round he has tried to include other photographs in which they are chatting with their contemporary vocalists or are seen in a relaxed mood. In fact, these would surely be apt ways of grabbing eye balls.

Besides this with the wedding season still upbeat, the Times Wedding Exhibition would be held in the city from January 15 to January 17, 2010. This year would be the fourth edition of the fair where the highlights would be on showcasing all the needs of the bride and bridegroom as they undergo the ritual of bonding ie, marriage. Also this event would act as the perfect platform as it will initiate business opportunities to promote products specially designed for couples, thereby creating a niche area amongst the customers. Designer clothing, intricately done up exquisite jewellery and other lifestyle products are expected to meet the eye of customers coming here.

Also the Pune Festival held between August and September during Ganesh Mahotsav is one of the star attractions which define the life of Pune city. The Chaturshringi Fair held during the Navratri time is one very popular event celebrating the cultural life of Pune and Maharashtra as a whole. It is basically an overnight fair which starts after sunset. Just like the Delhi Half Marathon, the Pune International Marathon also brings in charm to all athletes and sports and fitness freaks across Pune city. Local as well as international runners across countries like France, Paris, Italy come here to be a part of the event. This event also sees the participation and co-operation from popular film actors and celebrities.

Thereby, Pune as a fast developing city like any developing metropolitan sure has a lot to offer to its inhabitants. Through all such activities one only gets to know the enthusiasm with which such diverse festivals and events are held in Pune city.
