Ex-Arunachal Chief Minister Gegong Apang has been arrested by sleuths of the Special Investigation Cell (SIC) for his alleged involvement in a multi-crore public distribution system (PDS) scam. The SIC arrested him in Itanagar.
FORMER ARUNACHAL Pradesh Chief Minister Gegong Apang has been arrested by sleuths of the Special Investigation Cell (SIC) for his alleged involvement in a multi-crore public distribution system (PDS) scam. The SIC arrested him in Itanagar.
Earlier, Gegong Apang was summoned to the SIC and arrested under non-bailable sections based on material evidence and statement given by other accused in the 1,000-crore PDS scam. Apang was booked under section 120b (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery), 409 (criminal breach of trust) of IPC read with B-2 Prevention of Corruption Act.The SIC was constituted by the state government of Arunachal Pradesh to probe the multi-crore scam on the directive of the Guahati High Court following a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed by the Arunachal Citizens’ Right (ACR) Chairperson Bamang Anthony and Domin Loya, a public leader, on June 13, 2004.
Apang was the chief minister during the period when the scam took place. The scam relates to loss suffered by the public exchequer because of false and fraudulent transport subsidy bills, which were cleared without financial concurrence and paying inflated bills for procuring items.The case was forwarded to special session judge at North Lakhimpur in Assam for trial.
