Ex-PM Manmohan Singh, industrialist KM Birla summoned in coal scam as accused
The special CBI court which is looking after the coal block allocation scam has summoned the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as accused and has asked him to appear before the court on 8 April.

Along with the former Prime Minister, the former coal secretary PC Parakh has also been summoned by the special CBI court as accused. The charges against Dr. Singh includes corruption, criminal conspiracy and breach of trust by a public servant.

As reported by ABP News channel Manmohan Singh has said that he was feeling upset after being summoned as accused in coal scam.

The court summoned Hindalco's Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla also as an accused. All of them have to appear in court on April 8.

The three have been summoned by the judge Bharat Parashar, who rejected CBI's appeal to close the case.

Former PM Singh was questioned by CBI on January 20, 2015 about a Odisha coal field in Talabira block that was allotted in 2005 to Hindalco. It was alleged that Kumar Mangalam Birla had written two letters to Dr. Singh dated 7 May 2005 and 17 June 2005, requesting him for allocation of Talabira-II coal block to Hindalco (Hindalco is a part of Aditya Birla Gorup).

Coal allocation scam was a major political scandal around allocation of nation's coal deposit. Recently the Supreme Court has scrapped nearly 214 coal blocks allocated by the previous government over the past two decades.
