Ex-US Senator Larry Pressler: Pakistan no better than North Korea; says US, India should attack Pak and destroy its nuclear arsenal
On Monday former US Republican Senator called Pakistan a rogue nation and accused it of shielding terrorists.

"Pakistan should be declared a terrorist state and treated like North Korea, a rogue state, for shielding terrorists," said ex-US Senator from South Dakota on Monday. Pressler, 75, served three terms as US Senator over a career spanning across two decades and has also been a two-time member of the House of Representatives.

Larry Pressler is most remembered for drafting the famous Pressler Amendment in 1990 blocking all US aid to Pakistan after the erstwhile US President George HW Bush could not ascertain whether Pakistan was developing nuclear weapons or not.

The Amendment eventually led to blocking the delivery of around 30 F-16 fighter jets to Islamabad. While Pressler, who was the head of Senate's arms control subcommittee at that time, was dubbed as a hero in India, in his own words, "a devil in Pakistan".

However, Pressler has since long distanced himself from the Republicans, contesting Senate polls as an Independent in 2014 and later backing Hillary Clinton in the 2016 US Presidential election. But despite his differences with Donald Trump, Pressler believes the new US President is not even half as bad as he is being projected by the US media.

In fact, Pressler strongly believes that Trump could turn out to be the best US President for India yet because of his recent stern warning to Pakistan for harbouring terror. The former Senator wished that Donald Trump would soon act on his warning to Pakistan.

He said, "US must declare Pakistan a terrorist state, cut of all aid and must not treat Indian and Pakistan as equals. India is a democracy and Pakistan isn't. And Pakistan and ISI have lied to us for decades."

Pressler was speaking at an event in Mumbai, where he had arrived for the promotion of his book 'Neighbours in Arms: An American Senator's Quest for Disarmament in a Nuclear Sub-Continent'.

Furthermore, albeit the recent nuclear tests carried out by North Korea have left the Trump administration worried, Pressler maintained that Pakistan was a bigger threat than North Korea. He said, "In case of Pakistan, there is no strict line of control when it comes to nuclear weapons. A nuclear weapon from Pakistan can be smuggled into US without detection."

While speaking to TOI on Monday in Mumbai, Pressler suggested that both India and the United States should take the initiative and jointly strike and destroy nuclear sites inside Pakistan.

Pressler, a Vietnam veteran, was all praises for PM Modi and lauded his government for acting tough on Pakistan. He also mentioned about the denial of US visa to Narendra Modi when the latter was the CM of Gujarat calling it "a stain" on the US.
