Exams should be conducted online to save trees
We should minimise paper consumption, maximise recycled content, source paper fiber responsibly and employ cleaner paper production practices to save our environment. And don't miss tips for reducing your own waste.
EACH YEAR the number of candidates appearing for entrance examinations is increasing not only in various prestigious institutions but also in other universities of India. This year, Common Admission Test (CAT) for admission into the Institute of Management (IIM) may have faced problems due to online examination, but it was a big advantage for the environment. It saved about 50 tonnes paper while it needs about 20 to 25 trees to be felled to produce a tonne of paper.

It showed that by going online and not using paper prospectus, paper application forms, question papers, scoreboard etc, the CAT has saved atleast 1,000 trees from being cut down.

Although in the past, some universities and institutes have conducted online entrance examination in India, but this was first one attempted on such a large scale. It should be replicated elsewhere. I agree that technology somestimes failed and conducting an online examination for 2.42 lakh candidates is not easy. System needs improvement by means of management practices and infrastructure.

We should minimise paper consumption, maximise recycled content, source paper fiber responsibly and employ cleaner paper production practices to save our environment. And don’t miss tips for reducing your own waste.
