Merinews.com got in touch with some former cricketers and asked them as to how can Shastri and co. help team India come up with a better performance.
Karsan Ghavri, former Indian cricketer
''Ravi being selected as a team can be of a great help to team India. Everyone in the Indian team seems to sleeping, including players and the coaches. His words will wake them up from their sleep. As a senior and well respected Indian player, other players will listen to his wise words. Apart from this, his communication will be a good asset as he knows both Hindi and English, so he can talk in Hindi when his ideas are not understood by some players.''
Lalchand Rajput, former Indian cricketer
''The Indian team is at the bottom level right now. Ravi being an experienced campaigner, can bring in the much needed positivity to the players. This change of guard is always good for the Indian team, as there will be fresh ideas as well. On the other hand, the Indian players can talk about problems to the Indian coaching staff, which primarily includes Indians, so there will be no lack of communication. But, one has to remember that Ravi cannot change things instantly, but the most important thing is that Ravi should help the players in getting their confidence and self-belief back as well.''
Anshuman Gaekwad, former Indian Coach and cricketer
''The Indian team is on dire straits after putting up such an embarrassing performance against England in the just concluded Test series. Any kind of input from Ravi is going to be valuable for the players. He can bring back the morale of the team. The players are also aware now that if they fail to listen to his instructions, they could well be thrown out of the team. The Indian players will listen to Indian coaches more than a foreigner.''
