One of the wealthiest clubs in the world, Manchester City comprising of star players failed to overcome the challenge posed by a Championship side, Wigan Athletic in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup at the Etihad. Wigan, the defending champions defeated the favourites, Manchester City to reach the semi-finals of the competition with the score reading 2-1.
Goals from Jordi Gomez and James Perch made Wigan's dream possible, as they took, which was not expected. Manchester City were a fired unit, once they were two goals down, but still could only find the back of the net once with the Frenchman Nasri giving hope to the fans seated inside the stadium.
Credit must be given where it is due. Wigan looked solid in the back and gave it their all to progress further in the competition. Boyce was one of their best players on the pitch with his superb defending. Even players such as Dzeko, Aguero, Silva could not find a away past him. It was a quality display by the skipper, which must have energised the team as well.
During the last 30 minutes of the game, most of the game was played in Wigan's half, but their team stood to City's test of quality and skill with flying colours. There were chances for City to equalise, but one can call them unlucky as well. With this loss, City hopes of winning a treble, if there were any goes out of the window.
Wigan players may be high on confidence after their victory against City, but they need to maintain the same confidence when they play their next opponent, Arsenal in the semi-finals of the competition. Here as well, it is the gunners, who might be tipped as favourites to walk into the finals, but Arsenal has to pass Wigan's test of grit and character to stand a chance to find a spot in the finals of the FA Cup.
