A sudden spurt in the number of suicide rates amongst youth and teenagers compelled Facebook in collaboration with Samaritans to introduce a suicide countering page, which will instantly send the information to Facebook's head of operations' team.
TAKING INTO account the rising number of youth and teenage suicides, ace social networking site Facebook plans to add a suicide alert application on its page. The alert system enables users to write and discuss about any of their friend who is distressed or disheartened or in future can resort to their last option and give up their lives.
The feature has been introduced in collaboration with Samaritans, which has spread the information around the world. During a pilot test that was conducted, several people successfully tested it. The modus operandi of the application is that any Facebook user, who has a friend or anyone in his/her network and is concerned about them, can easily fill a form describing about their concern in detail along with the specified details of their friend.
The idea to implement such an initiative occured when many Facebook users had updated their statuses telling about how badly they want to end their lives after facing by a particular situation, which was apparently out if their control. The particular page that asks details about the user as well as the suspected friend asks for the reporting page where the messages and updates are posted with full information of the members. Soon after the information is fed, the messages are forwarded to the highest body of Facebook's user operations team. According to the Samaritans, its now being tested on a trial basis without any publicity, and it has been successful in its trial phase.
