Facebook has become an integral part of our lives. These days everyone is on the social networking sites so much that we are becoming impervious to the faults of these sites.
MEDIA AND internet play a large role in today’s world. So much so that the youth today join various social networking sites to supposedly make friends. But what they don’t realize is that because of these social networking sites, people today have lost the ability to converse face to face and they turn to Facebook instead.
They believe Facebook has made their lives easier. You can join pages, form groups and become fans of bands and artists, so much so that you can even make friends at a single click! This, in turn, has ruined their ability to face people in the real world. People today give more importance to their virtual profiles than their own, real identities.
A person is considered “cool” if he has over 200 friends and is considered to be a “loser”, if he doesn’t have more than 50 friends at least. But if they honestly ask themselves, they will realize that they hardly speak to 10 or maximum 20 of those Facebook friends in their friend’s list. The youth today are getting so addicted to these kinds of sites that they actually consider themselves to be “Facebook addicts”. I’m sure it wouldn’t be surprising to see people going to rehabilitation centers to cure this “disease”.Slowly and steadily, conversations have turned to chats or IMs, friends are made based on what they write on their profiles, people are considered good friends only if they comment regularly on walls and on photos. This reminds me, a funny thing about Facebook is the usage of the word ‘comment’. Keeping the dictionary meaning in mind, to comment used to mean, to pass snide remarks and was considered inappropriate. But Facebook has actually managed to change the English language in this matter because, today, the more ‘comments’ you have, the more famous you are.Facebook has changed people’s life forever. I’m not saying that Facebook is all bad; it also has its advantages. You can find old friends, keep in touch with them, share your thoughts with people from around the world, portray your emotions as ‘notes’ and many more. But the youth today, has taken it to such an extreme level that it is actually turning out bad for them, like the adage that excess of everything is bad. Now let me finish with a funny thing that happened to me recently.I asked a friend if he wanted to hang out and watch a movie or something, to which he replied, “Sorry man, I can’t. I’ve realized that hanging out with friends cuts into my social-networking.”
