SOCIAL NETWORKING site Facebook that was banned in Pakistan on Wednesday back online on Saturday? Pakistan telecommunications authority was ordered by the Lahore court on Wednesday to temporarily block access to Facebook after users created the page for Everybody Draw Mohammad Day and invited users to post caricatures of Prophet Mohammed.
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) also extended the ban to cover video sharing site YouTube, micro blogging site twitter, Wikipedia, mobile Blackberry services and had also blocked over 450 links on the Internet that contained derogatory material. There were also a large number of protests on the streets of Pakistan on Wednesday and Thursday, objecting to the page.
The page had over 108,000 fans and over 11,700 photos posted on Saturday. Official of the Facebook, based in California or the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority have not been confirmed officially about the lifted of the ban on Facebook.
Earlier, news was also coming that the Pakistani government lifted a ban on video-sharing website YouTube. But a YouTube spokesperson said on Thursday afternoon that the YouTube site is still being blocked in Pakistan. However, The PTA has said it would welcome contact from Facebook and YouTube to resolve the issue.
However, Facebook users in Pakistan are still happy with the ban of this social networking site and welcome the action taken by the government. Even they think to deactivate their accounts as soon as the Facebook activates in Pakistan.
