Facebook beats Orkut, crowned with numero uno position in India
After trailing Orkut for a long time in India, social networking site Facebook has finally achieved the top position in the country, if data released by research firm coMscore is to be believed.

After trailing Orkut for a long time in India, social networking site Facebook has finally achieved the top position in the country, if data released by research firm coMscore is to be believed.  As per coMscore data, Facebook registered 20.9 million users in July this year thus taking it to the top position as far as a social networking platform is concerned in India.

As per a statement issued by comScore, Facebook.com has grabbed the number one ranking in the social networking category for the first time in July with 20.9 million visitors, up 179 per cent versus year ago.

On the contrary, Google's social networking site, Orkut registered a growth of just 16 percent with 19.9 million users in July. While taking the backseat, Orkut's product management director, Victor Ribeiro wrote "Starting today, we will change the core function of Orkut so we can share and interact with different groups of friends on the Internet just like we do in real life.

He further explained that “we (the company) all maintain different groups of friends (or 'social circles'), and the Internet was not able to reflect that. Until now, social networks treated people from different groups like they were all the same: they were all 'friends'.

The third in the line after Facebook and Orkut was BharatStudent with 4.4 million visitors (up by 3%) followed by Twitter (3.3 million visitors). Although yahoo had in possession two of the top ten sites, the rankings for the two sites stood at Yahoo Pulse (3.5 million visitors) and Yahoo! Buzz (1.8 million visitors).

According to the same report, more than 33 million internet users, aged 15 years and above in India frequented social networking sites in July.
