Fallout of earthquakes can be contained with better technology
Japan has always tried to be better prepared after every incident of an earthquake. This is a lesson for all other nations to develop technology that will reduce damage caused by earthquakes.
AN OLD acquaintance of mine long time back got the opportunity to travel in a Mercedes car in Nepal. It was the first time he was travelling in a Mercedes car.

He cherished the ride as the roads were smooth and the car was speeding at around 80-90 mph. However, whenever, the road was bumpy he got the feeling as if he was floating in sea water. The car did not jerk at all even on bumpy roads because of “excellent quality shock absorbers” for lack of a better phrase.

The above is cited to highlight the importance of shock absorbers in the construction industry. The shock absorber’s function is to absorb or dissipate energy.

The United Nations comity of nations must give serious consideration to the manner in which buildings are constructed in earthquake prone zones.

The building industry has the knowledge and expertise of putting in place structures with shock absorbers so that even in extreme earthquake situations, the structure would remain unaffected or at least much less affected.

More research and innovation is the need of the hour to strengthen this “shock absorber” kind of material for being used in the construction industry. This will enable buildings to withstand earthquakes of high-magnitude quakes lasting for 5-7-10 minutes or more where buildings will sway in all directions but remain safe and secure with the help of shock absorbers placed at appropriate joints.

Once the United Nations comity of nations makes it mandatory, the construction industry will be forced to comply with constructing buildings with superior quality “shock absorbers” in all their constructions in those regions that are declared as earthquake prone zones.

Hoping the above merits consideration at the right quarters.
