Fast track implementation of large dam hydropower projects: Arunachal CM
Close on the heels of the shock wave of violence that left two people dead and several injured following the arrest of a Buddhist monk leader of an anti-large dam protest rally, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Kalikho Pul batted for fast-tracking environmental clearances for implementation of hydro-power projects, which are in planning stage currently.

Pul while speaking at the conference 'Hydro power at crossroads - tapping the untapped', organized by industry body ASSOCHAM, advocated that the forest clearances needed to be delinked with the completion of basin studies.

He indicated that currently, 156 dams are in planning stages and most of them awaited environmental clearances.

Various NGOs and the Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress have flayed the stand of the state government on large dams.

According to the protesters, large dam projects lead to extensive submergence of agricultural land and forest; they destroy fishing and other livelihood means of indigenous people and adversely impact on the rich biodiversity of the region along with enhancement of seismic activities of the earth.
