Father's Day: How a father should pray for his son
Father's Day is a western world initiated celebration to honour fathers, father figures, paternal bonds and fatherhood. Different countries observe the day on different dates and this year, it will be celebrated on June 16 in India.

The day will be celebrated to mark the influence of fathers in society and recognize their contribution as a parent to the family. The celebration has caught up in India too due to card industry and other market forces.

About an ideal and responsible father, it has been rightly said that such a father is more than a hundred school teachers. Paying gratitude to their father figures, family members wish them and make them feel special on this day. On this day, every father should remember that one day his son would follow his example instead of his advice.

A father has not only to take care of the financial needs of the family, but also inculcate human values and social skills among the family members. Over the years, fathers tend to become a bit sullen and cynical, so on Father's Day, children must do so something to make them smile and laugh their heart out. On this, fathers also need to understand every fathering situation has a fifty percent chance of being right, as Bill Cosby puts it.

When we are in our teens, how much we resent the father figures. This feeling has been rightly described by Mark Twain in his saying, "When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years."

A father must be life-long learner and keep on evolving himself to surprise his children. This aspect of fatherhood is aptly reflected in an anonymous quote which goes like this: "One night a father overheard his son pray: Dear God, Make me the kind of man my Daddy is. Later that night, the Father prayed, Dear God, Make me the kind of man my son wants me to be."

The teenagers are best critics of their father. Therefore, when children come of their age, a father must treat them as friends and implement a participatory approach to decision making in the family matters. A father needs to learn from Charles Wadsworth quote, "By the time a man realizes that may be his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong."
