Fatso review: Unconventional storyline gets a few chuckles
While the story of a fat boy is quite common, the whole 'after life' angle brings a unique feature..

AFTER WATCHING the Rajat Kapoor film Fatso, one has to marvel at the writer and the director to pull off a film that is almost like a fantasy yet made to seem like it can happen to anyone. Although the underlining theme of the comedy/ drama was ‘love is not about physical appearance but about the soul,’ the actual story was more complicated about that. While everyone is very pleased with Ranvir Shorey’s acting, some found it hard to digest the concept of the film.

Purab Kohli and Gul Panag have played the happy couple, about to be married, and Ranveer Shorey is the fat friend who can only think about food. The first half of the film is slow, almost as if building up to an incident that would trigger the core story. The same kind of jokes that fat people are often subjected to, are seen at the beginning. However, once the accident happens and the Purab Kohli’s character dies off to learn that it was a mistake, the story really kicks off.

He demands of the Yamraj that he be sent back but is informed that he can either choose to stay back or return to his friend Ranveer’s body (as his own body has been cremated), and it was Ranveer who should have died in the accident. Thus, in a very improbable situation the soul of Purab returns in his fat friend's body to win his love back.

The creation of a government office kind of heaven is one of the interesting points of the film. Ranveer is truly magnificent as initially a forlorn soul with food as his best friend, then as a jolly outgoing chap, who wants to have Gul Panag fall in love with him. While everyone knows the ending to that story, one might want to check it out as it is a nice attempt by Rajat Kapoor with an unconventional storyline - and the film does give you a few chuckles.
