FAULTY DESIGN of the Pier 67 near Lady Shri Ram college in South Delhi could be one of reasons for the collapse of elevated Metro rail track on last Sunday. This was disclosed by none other than Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan, who said that design deficiency was probably the most important reason behind the accident, although he did not discount problems due to poor material and substandard material.
The Metro chief reiterated that if any negligence was found it would be dealt with severely. As far as the crack on Pier 67 is concerned, Sreedharan said that the pier was under monitoring and thin glass had been placed on the pillar to check if the crack widened but this did not happen.
The DMRC chief said that the accident is being probed by a four-member committee. He further said that a separate audit has been ordered to check all such installations with regards to designs, drawings and construction.
Sreedharan also said that after the completion of stage II of Delhi Metro, he will retire and return to his native village in Kerala.
