FDA has approved the vaccine on Thursday April 29. Dendreon Corp. has developed the prostate cancer vaccine which called Provenge. The action comes more than three years after an FDA advisory panel recommended approval.
Prostate cancer vaccine Provenge developed by Seattle-based Dendreon Corp., treatment involves taking a patient's own white blood cells and using a drug that trains them to more actively attack cancer cells. Provenge, a therapeutic vaccine is made from the patient's own white blood cells. Once WBC removed from the patient, the cells are treated with the drug and placed back into the patient. After the treatment of these cells, it kills cancer cells, while leaving normal cells unharmed.
Seattle based Dendreon management said it will make the drug available through about 50 clinical centers and has plans to increase manufacturing capacity over the next year. Provenge works by prompting a patient’s immune system to wage its own battle against the disease. According to American Cancer Society report estimates, more than 192,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in the United States each year and about 27,300 men die from the disease.

Shares of Dendreon Corp. jumped Thursday April 29 following the Food and Drug Administration's approval of the biotech's drug Provenge to treat advanced prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is usually treated with surgery, radiation, or medicine that blocks testosterone.
