He defeated his opponent in straight sets, where the score read 6-4, 6-4 to progress into the next round of the competition. The match lasted for only 67 minutes, reported Toronto Sun.

He is determined to overcome the disappointing loss he suffered during his Davis Cup outing for Switzerland. He is also the top seed for the competition. Hence, he gets a walkover, thus resulting in a quarter final berths for the Swiss star. This would give him a strong edge over his opponents, as he will have some extra time to rest his body. His opponent for the game would be Jarkko Nieminen, who defeated Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 5-7 and 7-6, reported AP.
His performance against Mahut must have caught the attention of other players in the competition, such as Del Potro, Tomas Berdych, who might be the other top contenders for the title. Federer had last won this title in 2005 by defeating Ivan Ljubicic.
