Feeling the healing power of clowning: Clown Theater Performance Workshop under 'Collage of Kilkari' held in Jaipur
During the summer vacation of this year, the annual theatre workshop 'Collage of Kilkari' for children in Jaipur, the participants were exposed to the nuances of Clown Theatre Performance (CTP). Not only learnt how to do makeup like and dress up in the proper costume. The CTP workshop was held in a local school in the city, it is reported.

The workshop is being being jointly organized jointly by Curio Children Theatre and Rajasthan Lalit Kala Academy (RLKA). In the master class, children interacted with clown expert GS Channi, who was also director of the workshop, on healing effects of the CTP that involves skills such as 'large act' and 'scene work'.

The concept of certified medical clowns and therapeutic clowns is common in some western countries who aid healing process in hospitals and also visit special schools for clown therapy.

Often, also medical clowing or medi clowing is also known as clown care, clown healing and hospital clowning. For this, clowns are specially trained and certified or licensed to function as 'clown doctors' to become elligible to visit to hospitals 'to help in lifting patient's moods with the positive power of hope and humour'.

Here are ABCs of clown healing:

A: Attending the psycho-social needs of the hospitalized children and adults

B: Basic skills of making funny gestures, showing magic tricks, singing funny songs, storytelling with loud dramatization

C: Combining specific theatre skills with laughter

D: Delivering physiological health benefits of humour, amusement and laughter

E: Enacting hospital routines in amusing way to get adjusted to hopitalization without fears and with positivity

It needs to be understood that healing clowning is much beyond buffoonery and cracking silly jokes since it requires a deep knowledge of science of healing and neuroscience along specific insights in psychology and emotional needs of ailing persons or whose well-being is at risk.
