Feroz Shah stadium: The winning Test cricket ground for India
India won against West Indies by 5 wickets in the first cricket Test match in the on going series at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi today. It was a total 11 and eighth consecutive Test victory at the venue for the Indian cricket team.
FEROZ SHAH Kotla Stadium in New Delhi is one of the oldest cricket stadiums in India, and was established in 1883 as a cricket ground. This historical cricket stadium is also the luckiest Test stadium for the Indian cricket team, where the team has registered 11 Test victories including the just concluded India vs. West Indies first cricket Test match today.
The Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, who had hosted first ever Test cricket after the Indian independence, till now has hosted 31 Test matches, and in 17 Test matches there were results. Out of the Indian 11 Test victories at this venue, India chased to victory on seven occasions. At this venue, from 1987 to 2007, in eight Tests, the match ended with a result, and the Indian team won seven Test matches in a row. Also, at this ground, the Indian cricket team has been undefeated for over 20 years.
This stadium is also a favourite stadium for many of Indian legends in term of records. Two legends of world cricket, Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble, have never faced a defeat in their entire career at this venue.
At the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, the greatest Indian leggie Anil Kumble claimed 63 wickets from 11 games including historical and rare 10-wicket haul in an inning. He took 10 wickets for 74 runs against Pakistan in 1999, and became only the second cricketer in Test history after Jim Laker to achieve this feet. He also played his last cricket Test match at this historical venue.
In 2005, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar broke the record of most centuries of Sunil Gavaskar with his 35th Test century, and in November 2011 against West Indies he crossed the 15,000 runs mile stone in Test cricket on this ground.
It was on this ground that former English opener Geoff Boycott surpassed Gary Sobers' world record Test aggregate. In 1983-84, at the Kotla, Sunil Gavaskar scored his 29th century against West Indies to equal Don Bradman's record for the highest number of hundreds in Test cricket.
With various unique records at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, there were also some incidents that sullied its image. On December 27, 2009, an ODI match between India and Sri Lanka was called off after Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara's refusal to play on a dangerous pitch, and ICC banned Kotla for 12 months.
In the future, we all hope the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium will produce many more records and the cricketers will touch new highs at this venue.
