Finally ICC takes action, suspends the tainted Pakistani trio

INTERNATIONAL CRICKET Council (ICC)  the supreme body of cricket after much dilly-dallying cleared the air engulfing spot fixing scam yesterday by suspending the three Pakistani cricketers, who are at the centre of the storm.

The anti-corruption wing of the ICC invoked special law laid down to crack down on corruption in the gentleman’s game and suspended skipper Pakistan side Salman Butt, seam bowler Mohd Asif  and Mohd Amir, provisionally from playing any sort of cricket until a final decision comes on the shadowy issue. The players have two weeks time to approach ICC for hearing in the case and present their stand.

The world was stunned, last week, when a sting operation carried out by a leading British tabloid showed in a video footage the murky spot fixing deal and the involvement of the trio, Salman Butt, Mohd Asif and Mohd Amir. The deal was engineered through an undercover agent and bookie. The video footage clearly shows bookie, Mazhar Majeed settling a spot fixing deal in lieu of whopping amount, $ 150000.

The news spread like wild fire and questions were raised over the future of the tainted players. Pakistani fans felt cheated, mass processions and agitations against the tainted players were reported from many parts of Pakistan. Agonized fans also burnt their effigies and demanded stringent action against the players. Veena Malik, the former girl friend of Asif further fuelled the wild fire, she made many revelations about Asif and his relations with the bookies.

However PCB took everyone by surprise, the board said nobody is guilty until proven in the court of law. The board seemed to be in no hurry in taking action against the tainted players and refused to suspend them.

The tainted players if proven guilty might face life ban according to senior official of ICC.
“We will not tolerate corruption in cricket. We must be decisive with such matters and if proven, these offences carry serious penalties up to a life ban”, ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said.

Nothing can be speculated until the final verdict comes out on the murky business of match fixing and efforts to alleviate corruption from the game. Why can’t we have a similar law that bans corrupt politicians and officers from government job and politics? The step will facilitate in creating a beautiful India and Pakistan, devoid of poverty, hunger, corruption and unemployment.
