Finally Pakistan Army succeeds in ousting Nawaz Sharif
After being made to step down from his chair of the Prime Minster of Pakistan on charges of corruption post the Panama Papers leak, Pakistani Army in connivance with their Supreme Court of Pakistan has ensured that Nawaz Sharif is politically finished.

A National Accountability (NAB) Court on Friday handed out a 10 years prison term to Nawaz Sharif in absentia in the Avenfield corruption case which involves acquiring four flats in the UK. His daughter Maryam Nawaz has also been sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment. Both of them have also been fined with 8 million and 2 million pounds respectively.

It is worth remembering that general elections are being held in Pakistan on 25 July this year. While earlier, only Nawaz Sharif had been disqualified by the Supreme Court of Pakistan from contesting elections, now his daughter Maryam has also stands disqualified after being convicted in the graft case.

Since last year, the Pakistani Army has been working in collusion with Pakistan's top court to overthrow Nawaz Sharif. In July last year, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had come up with an allegation that since Nawaz Sharif had not disclosed the income he had received from his son's company in Dubai in his nomination papers, he was corrupt and dishonest and hence could not continue to be the Prime Minster of Pakistan. Subsequently, Sharif was banned by the SC in April this year from holding public office or contesting elections for life.

After his disqualification and stepping down from the post of Prime Minster of Pakistan last year, Nawaz Sharif along with his daughter Maryam Nawaz took to the streets, doing road shows and campaigning for his party, the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz). Lo and behold, he and his daughter started getting tremendous response from the public which unnerved the Pakistan Army. Pakistan's Supreme Court came to the Army's aid and both in connivance started planning to permanently end Sharif's game.

The cardinal mistake that Sharif committed after being elected in 2013 with a thumping majority was that he didn't try hard enough to bring the Army under the ambit of the democratically elected government of Pakistan and improve bilateral ties with India. Both these issues are anathema to the Pakistan Army. The Army never in the last 70 years of Pakistan's history has accepted hegemony of a democratically elected government over it. As for good relations with India, antagonism with India is the Pakistan Army's bread and butter. This allows the Army to project to the people of Pakistan that but for them, India will gobble up Pakistan any day. This ensures that they can run a 20 billion dollar industry in Pakistan (Ayesha Siddiqa's book Military Incorporation).

The Pakistani Army's game is to dilute Sharif's allegations that the Army is running a parallel government in Pakistan and sponsoring jehadi organisations especially in Kashmir, since the general elections are shortly due in the country, to be held on July 25.
