Fire in Channel Tunnel, 32 evacuated
Thirty two people were evacuated after a fire broke out on a freight service on the Channel Tunnel today. There were no serious injuries. The evacuees were taken out through a service tunnel.
A FIRE broke out on the Channel Tunnel on Thursday and 32 people had to be evacuated.  The fire was said to have started beneath the Channel, nearly seven miles from Calais. The fire broke out on a freight service.

The shuttle train, transporting lorries, was evacuated and 32 people taken to safety through a service tunnel. Even as those on board the freight train fled, French fire fighters sought to put out the fire. The freight train was on its way from Folkestone in Kent to Calais.

"All the train drivers are safe. No one is at risk, no customers are at risk," a Eurotunnel spokeswoman was quoted by the media as saying.
A train is on its way from France to pick up the people from the service tunnel and take them back to France, the Kent Police said in a statement to the media.

Services in both directions were suspended by Eurostar even as fire fighters fought the blaze. Seven fire engines were despatched along with four ambulances from the British side of the tunnel. There were no major injuries.
