A suicide bomber targeted NATO convoy on Tuesday killing 18 people, including five American and a Canadian. The Canadian soldier Col. Geoff parker, 42, was the highest-ranking member of the Canadian force to die in Afghanistan since the Canadian mission began in 2002.
The bomb explosion happened about 8 a.m. as the streets were packed with cars, buses and trucks. The bomb ripped apart vehicles and hurled body parts along the street.
In this attack 12 Afghan civilians also died, and 47 people were wounded some of them are seriously injured. Afghan authorities are saying that death toll may rise because some of them are seriously injured. Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the blast, saying that bomber was from Kabul and the vehicle was packed with 1.650 pounds of explosives. U.S. force spokesperson Col. Wayne said five American service members were killed in the Kabul blast. This blast brought the numbers of US troops killed in Afghanistan, Pakistan since 2001 to at least 993.
After the killing of six Italian soldiers in September, it is biggest loss of NATO troops since then. Eralier this month, The Taliban announced a new offensive –“Al Fatah” or “victory”—which would target NATO forces, foreign diplomats, contractors and Afghan government officials. The Tuesday suicide bombing is clear indication that Taliban have reconstituted their underground cells.
