Fix standards for judging the quality of education, say educators
Everyone is saying the standard of education is falling down. "Unless we clearly fix reference standards of education, the measurement of falling standards and interventions to raise the standard cannot be accomplished. In education, the standards can be in terms of what kind of individual we want through education and what kind of society we wish to create. There has to be clarity of standards in every institution, it we wish to achieve or raise standards," says Dr. Anita Srivastava, an educational psychologist and student counselor in Jaipur.
It is now being exceedingly felt that the teachers' centrality in improving the quality of education through standards is crucial. Many educators now perceive teachers as corner-stones for any successful educational reform.

According to Audet and Jordan, the final point is that professional development provides the critical link between teacher change and successful reform. Furthermore, significant changes for students are unlikely to occur unless and until teachers' attitudes and practices change.

Cullickson says that standards provide a framework for designing, conducting and judging an educational activity. Mainly, four kinds of standards can be used, namely, feasibility standards, utility standards, accuracy standards and propriety standards.

Frankel sees the merit of standards in the acquisition of values also. According to Frankel, values are not mere ideas or thing. Rather, values are the standards of conduct or worth that a person endorses that he or she tries to live up to or maintain.

Therefore, teachers and other educational functionaries need to gain a comprehensive understanding of standards and benchmarks; to become adept at using standards-based instructional planning models.

Many educators now feel that fixing and communicating standards provide a vision of what one needs to do to assure adequate learning experiences for most students.
