The best aspect of Rock On is that it is true to it's plot and there are no force-fit item-songs or comic gags in it. That being said, is the film really another take on a group of buddies - a la Dil Chahta Hai? Read on
The film opens with the band ’setting’ a song. It’s evident they are college-students (don’t like school students!)
As soon as the credit titles are through, we see each of the character: Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli and Luke Kenny in a different gear, thereby establishing that a considerable time has elapsed.
Now, Farhan Akhtar (Aditya Shroff) is a successful investment banker, living a content life with his wife Prachi Desai (Sakshi). The house is plush and he drives a BMW (couldn’t see what series?). A content life any man can dream of. Is it?
Arjun Rampal (Joe Mascarenhas) lives with his wife Shahana Goswami (Debbie). He’s also not happy.
Purab Kohli (KD) has joined his family business and has a smile on his face as, it seems, he has resigned to his fate.
Luke Kenny (Rob) is still a musician and helps Anu Malik (in a cameo) with the music.
Thus, the director establishes that something is amiss with all the four protagonists.
Do you want to know more?
Yes, you want to and that’s the scoring point Rock On – it unfolds bit by bit, rounding off in the pre-climax, when Aditya (Farhan) meets his ex-girlfriend, Tanya.
The film is about the aspirations we all have as college-yuppies; the dreams that we are going to rule the world! One day, some day and how those dreams, when unfulfilled; turn the man into recluse (Farhan); depressed (Rampal); indifferent (Kenny) and resigned to fate (Purab).
So, where do the girls fit in? It is one of the protagonists’ wife, Prachi, who works as a catalyst to find his true identity.
More than, Farhan, the film marks the arrival of Abhishek Kapoor. It is worth noting that after a disastrous Aryan (remember?); he got such a lavish platform for his re-launch. The faith Farhan reposed in him has paid rich dividends.
Farhan makes a confident debut as does Prachi. Rampal and Kenny fit the bill. Purab with his antics wins accolades.
What rocks the movie
Cinematography; amazingly stylish and enhances the mood of the movie. It’s heartening to see that after RGV, more directors are relying on the techniques of cinema to strengthen the movie, rather than relying on the stars.
Performances, even the small cameos have got brilliant acts.
Narrative. The slow manner, in which the film unfolds actually keep the viewers’ interest alive. Guess, a linear narrative wouldn’t have left such a strong impact.
What chucks the movie
Music. The film is called Rock On and there is not a single track that you carry back home. The music will be forgotten as soon as the movie is off the halls.
Verdict
Strictly for classes and metros, as proved by a mere 10 people in the show, just 30km out of Delhi! Also, those looking for the completeness or the entertainment aspect of Dil Chahta Hai are bound to be disappointed; but the film is eons better than the production-houses earlier films (Don, remember? and Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.)
