Focussed Malaria contol programme going on in Kalahandi district
The Kalahandi district is a focused district for malaria control by Government of India and the programme is supported with the assistance of World Bank. Nearly 1800 ASHA workers are engaged at community level for health services in the district.
MALARIA IS a major health problem in Kalahandi district of Orissa. The district has 13 Block public health centres (PHC) and 39 new PHCs. Nearly 1800 ASHA workers are engaged at community level for health services. The district is a focused district for malaria control by Government of India and the programme is supported with the assistance of World Bank.

Additional manpower like VBD consultants, MPW (M) are posted. Sentinel site to track malaria cases are fully functional. A full time DMO is positioned and there are about 70 per cent vacancies of doctors against the sanctioned post. There is also an absence of laboratory technicians in five primary health centres.

 
Approximately 2.5 lakh fever cases are reported every year, out of which around 30,000 cases are malaria. Pv cases are reporting less while the Pf per cent is almost 86 per cent. Out break reported in the month of July in Chiliguda, Jaipatna and Borda PHC while in 10 other PHC it was successfully controlled.

Analysis of the current situation

  • ABER and API are decreasing while SPR is increasing since 2007;
  • Pf cases are increasing while Pv cases are decreasing;
  • No reporting of mixed cases;
  • Occurrence of two peaks of cases, major one in July and minor one in October in 2008;
  • Epidemic threshold was predicted high for the month of July 2010;
  • API is increasing in most of the sub centres since 2004;
  • More than 100 sub centres have API more than 10.
  • About 200 sub centre have API more than five.

Objectives

  • To reduce the incidence of Pf infection by 10 per cent in the district by end of 2011.
  • To reduce/ eliminate deaths due to malaria by 20 per cent in the district by end of 2011.
