Foot Problems in diabetic patients
With the case of diabetes increasing every year, it also has its own implications on the human body. This article throws light on the foot problems of diabetic patients.
INDIA IS the diabetic capital of the world with over four crore diabetics. Foot Problems are the most common cause of hospitalization in diabetic patients. 85 per cent of diabetics suffer from at least one foot problem once in their life time. Every year more than 50 thousand amputations of lower limb take place in India alone. This number is just the tip of the Iceberg, said an eminent health practitioner.
1.) Foot ulcers are an important cause of morbidity in patients with diabetes.
2.) Both vascular and neurologic disease increases the risk of foot ulcers.
3.) All patients with diabetes should be screened annually to identify those at risk for foot ulceration.
4.) Perform a history, comprehensive foot examination, and test for loss of protective sensation using a 10-g monofilament for screening purposes.
5.) Get ankle-brachial pressure index testing in any patient with symptoms or physical exam findings of peripheral arterial disease.
6.) Counselling regarding preventive foot care should be given to any patient whose feet are at risk for ulceration.
7.) Refer patients to a specialist if they are at particularly high risk for foot ulceration due to risk factors like previous history of foot ulceration or amputation; loss of protective sensation and/or neuropathic foot deformities and peripheral vascular disease.
