For people's cause: The dream of a debonair and visionary
As an engineer, he would akin to apply his engineering skills to design and build a modern Gohpur, the constituency from where he has been elected as an MLA with a high margin of votes against the runner-up candidate of the Congress.

Having completed his HS from prestigious Cotton College in 1984 and BE from Jorhat Engineering College in 1989, this younger son of a dedicated teacher-couple from Kalabari, a far-off place of then Sonitpur district of Assam (presently Biswanath), preferred to serve the common people than to opt for a job outside.

Devoted to politics with a zeal for social service since 1995, this low-profile, debonair, energetic and visionary has overcome all odds and obstacles to become the new leader of people from all sections of that multi-cultural locality.

Yes, the person referred to is none other than Utpal Borah, the newly-elected Member of Assam Legislative Assembly from Gohpur constituency, who has ousted the 15-years' reign and family-politics of present Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, Ripun Borah.

"This is not only my win; it is the win of the people of Gohpur against the family-politics of Ripun Borah and Monika Borah. The outgoing MLA, Monika Borah, wife of Ripun Borah, doesn't know even the four boundaries of Gohpur. Her worthlessness during the last five years, Ripun Borah's failures to truly serve the common people in the previous two terms; the rising corruption in implementation of various government schemes during last fifteen years, large-scale misappropriation in allotment of IAY-houses, the politics of blanket and yarn: all contributed to the downfall of Monika Borah and helped in my Win. This is the mandate of people and I have accepted it as my turn to serve them," Borah stated in an exclusive interview to NETB.

With definite vision and objectives to make Gohpur a model constituency in the state, Utpal Borah plans to improve the living standards of people, to build infrastructure such as roads, bridges and proper drainage system, to engage more youths in skill development and entrepreneurship, to use more of agricultural land, to solve flood problem, to install small-scale industries for the unemployed youths and women, and so on and so forth.

He believes that the people of the region are not backward from the point of view of talent, rather on mindset only. "I will try to infuse a mindset of work-culture among the youth of the new generation. Unlike practice of the previous MLAs, there will be no corruption and discrimination in the allotment of beneficiary regarding any scheme or project of the government during my tenure and only genuine beneficiaries will be selected. I will always give priority to uplift the BPL families of my constituency," Borah said.

It is worth mentioning that Borah believes in 'universal humanity' and always stands for the causes of all sections of humanity as well. 'As their true representative, I will treat people from all tribes, castes and religions with equality. My emphasis will be to maintain harmony and brotherhood in my constituency so that no repetition of communal clashes of 1983 and 1989 would happen in future," he said.

This energetic leader is serious enough to make Gohpur an important tourist destination based on its elements of history. He feels that the statues of Swahid Kanaklata and Swahid Mukunda Kakati, the two prominent martyrs of 1942's Quit India Movement, are being lying unnoticed by the previous MLAs.

He will take initiative to make these places of historical importance well-managed and attractive so that tourists in large numbers come to see these places. He will build proper infrastructure for the cause. Rather, Borah is also eager to take measures for preservation of the original homes of these two historical figures. At the same time, the newly elected MLA has concrete plans to upgrade the historical Kalyani Mandir to another place of interest for tourists.

There are more such issues for which Utpal Borah will be vocal in the assembly. He is a good orator too to put his points with much value in the floor of the house. To be sure, this humanitarian leader will prove his mettle beyond his territory of politics.

"I will always fight against corruption. Now my objective is to highlight the burning problems of Gohpur and to find their permanent solutions," Borah asserted.
