Ford Motor Co. is going to kill its 72 year old Mercury Brand. As per plans automaker is going to add models to the Lincoln lineup to give dealers more products to sell. As per auto experts, Mercury’s death was inevitable, but last years financial crisis made it easier for Ford to kill the brand.

Ford has scheduled a conference call with dealers and press conference for late Wednesday. As per press brief this press conferences is all about important product and brand discussion.

Mercury, which sells the Milan midsize car and Mariner midsize SUV, has been suffering for years from a lack of new product and advertising support from Ford.

Mercury was its best in 1978, when it sold more than 580,000 vehicles but last year it touched its bottom sales with just 92,000. Ford has market share of 15 percent in U.S. in which Mercury component is just 1 percent.

Mercury is an automobile marque of Ford Motor Co. founded in 1939 by Edsel Ford, son of Henry Ford. The purpose was to market entry level luxury cars slotted between Ford-branded regular models and Lincoln-branded luxury vehicles.

Mercury was its own division at Ford until1945 when it was combined with Lincoln into the Lincoln-Mercury Division. In 1949, Mercury introduced the first of its "new look", integrated bodies, at the same time that Ford and Lincoln also changed styling radically. Since then it introduced several models to server the automobile market.
