Former Haryana IGP Manmohan Singh was a role model for other officers
Manmohan Singh, retired Inspector General of Police (IGP), Haryana, who passed away few days back was an officer whose uniform was his religion.

Paying tributes to him, Dr John V George, retired DGP of Haryana Police said that he was a simple, honest and upright officer. Retired ADGP of Haryana, VK Kapur said that he was a thorough gentleman who was professional, dignified and graceful.

Late Manmohan Singh had served as the IGP, Haryana in 1980. He faced the toughest challenge of his life as the state witnessed spurious liquor tragedies in Narwana town of Jind district and Kalanwali in Sirsa district where about one hundred persons died after consuming hooch and an equal number of people were blinded. Contractors running the liquor business were enjoying patronage of the then Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, middle rung cops and the excise department.

Kaku Ram, the main accused in Narwana case had taken shelter at the official residence of a Haryana minister in Chandigarh to evade arrest. Vends in  Kalanwali were owned by persons close to top political bosses. Manmohan Singh was under tremendous pressure from politicians to keep a soft approach towards liquor contractors.

I was a reporter working for the Indian Express group at Jind during that time.

After Manmohan Singh shared information about the arrest of Kaku Ram with me, my story was published in the Indian Express. Sanjay Kothari, presently secretary to the President of India was then the SDM of Narwana and his timely action saved several lives.

The erstwhile DSP Narwana, Sitarram rang up and alerted the liquor contractor that Sanjay Kothari was a strict officer and that he had directed the police to conduct raids. After this information, the liquor contractor fled destroying the spurious liquor to remove evidence. In such a situation, Manmohan Singh took command and ensured that all the accused are arrested. My story on how the DSP alerted the liquor contractor about the raid was also published in the Indian Express.

At that time leading magazine"Carvan" had reported that despite repeated threats and warnings, Pawan Bansal, a young reporter of the Indian Express got the story published in his paper which finally led to the DSP's suspension.

Subash Yadav, IGP, Karnal said that Manmohan Singh was a role model for the young generation.

Retired DGP Ranjeev Dalal while recalling old times said, "I was posted as SP of Bhiwani district in 1979 and there was a revolt like situation. I was to get engaged, but Manmohan Singh refused to sanction me leave for attending my own engagement ceremony stating that cops and army men can get married even through their photographs."

I had the privilege of meeting Manmohan Singh few years back at the marriage reception of my friend Dr John V George's daughter at Panchkula.

His death comes as a personal blow to me as he had promised to share his experiences with with me for my upcoming book on Haryana Police titled 'Untold Story of Haryana Police".

Dr George said that Singh was a keen farmer and owned a farm house in Sangrur district of Punjab bordering with Jind district of Haryana. Once George, who was SP, Jind, visited the farm house and foundhim ploughing the field with his tractor.

George said that Singh encouraged good work and good officers and above all, was a good human being at heart.
