FORMER NEPALAESE Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala breathed his last on Saturday (March 20) in Kathmandu. He was 86 and suffered from prolonged illness. Koirala served four terms as PM of Nepal. He was a peacemaker and led the masses to mark the end of the King's authoritarian rule.
Koirala began his political career in 1947. He was imprisoned in 1960 because of his failed uprising against the King. He also masterminding the 1973 plane Hijacking to fund his banned party. Detained, exhiled at various occasions, but he never gave up on the cause of Democracy. He became the first PM of Nepal in 1991 through first democratic elections. He was an eminent figure to end the insurgency of the Maoist making Nepal a Secular Republic.
Koirala was admitted to hospital several times because of Hypertension, Asthma and heart problem. He died at her daughter's house in the afternoon. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has extented his condolence to his family and desribed Koirala as one of the tallest leaders of Nepal. The government of Nepal has decided to nominate Koirala for Nobel Peace Prize for his contribution in signing peace pact with the Maiost.
