Former Prime Minister I K Gujral, 92, was cremated at Delhi's Smriti Sthal with full state honours today. The cremation ceremony was attended by President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Others who attended the cremation included UPA Chairperson Sonia, Defence Minister A K Antony, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde
, Commerce Minister Anand Sharma, Law Minister Ashwani Kumar, Farooq Abdullah, and Jaipal Reddy
Many other prominant leaders present were the BJP leaders L K Advani and Arun Jaitley, Haryana
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda
, Om Prakash Chautala, Ramvilas Paswan, Danish Ali. Diplomats from various countries and senior Indian bureaucrats were also present.
Gujral began his political career as Vice President in NDMC in the 1950s followed by tenures as a Union Minister in Congress Government and India's Ambassador to the USSR.
He became Minister of External Affairs in the Janata government and United Front (UF) government. He replaced H D Deve Gowda
as Prime Minister for a few months after the Congress withdrew support to UF in 1997.
