Former President Pranab Mukherjee, singer Bhupen Hazarika and social activist Nanaji Deshmukh conferred Bharat Ratna Award
President Ram Nath Kovind, presented Bharat Ratna Awards to Nanaji Deshmukh (posthumously), Dr Bhupendra Kumar Hazarika (posthumously) and former President Pranab Mukherjee at an Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 8 in New Delhi, informed a release.

Former President Mukherjee (83) received the award himself, while late Late Hazarika's son Tej and late Deshmukh's close relative Vikramjeet Singh collected the awards at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Vice Pesident M Venkaikah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Ministers  Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and my others including Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal attended the function.

Former vice-president Hamid Ansari and chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi were also present at the function.

Also were present the some prominent Congress leaders like Ahmed Patel, Sushil Kumar Shinde, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. 

It may be recalled that late Deshmukh was one of the founder members of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh and was associated with the RSS and its chain of schools throughout India. He was associated with the Jai Prakash Narayan's movement against the Emergency imposed by late Indira Gandhi in 1975.

Dr Hazarika was multi-faceted personality from Assam, known as a noted playback singer, lyricist, musician, poet and filmmaker - all rolled into one. He had also contested the Guwahati Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket in 2004 but lost the election.
