Professor Basanta Kumar Behura, former Vice Chancellor of Utkal University, was conferred with one of the most prestigious award, 'Kalinga Samman 2012' at the Institute of Physics in Bhubaneswar on Friday. It was the Chief Minister of Odisa, Naveen Patnaik, who awarded the Professor for his lifetime contribution for popularisation of science.
‘Kalinga Samman’ is being presented to Odia scientists for their outstanding contribution for popularization of science among masses. Odia scientists consider Kalinga Samman award to be one of the prominent awards in their field. The professor also received a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh along with memento, certificate and citation.
On this prestigious occasion, an e-book entitled ‘UNESCO Kalinga Laureates for Universal Peace’, published by the Kalinga Foundation Trust with financial assistance from Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, was released at the function. The e-book contains biography of 66 UNESCO Kalinga Prize Winners from 23 countries around the world.
Kalinga Foundation Trust was instituted in 1951 by the legendary leader of Odisha Biju Patnaik (Former Chief Minister) and since 1952, UNESCO Kalinga Prize is awarded by the trust under the aegis of UNESCO, Paris.
