Veteran Marxist leader and former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu's condition continued to be very critical on Saturday after he suffered multi-organ failure. "The 95 years old leader's heart and liver function had deteriorated," stated Dr. K. Maity, who heads the eight-member medical board treating the Jyoti Basu.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) patriarch Jyoti Basu is entirely on life support system. Last night his blood pressure had dropped suddenly. The blood pressure was stabilised to an extent after administering a new medicine. Dr. Susrut Banerjee told the reporters "Basu is suffering from multi-organ failure. His lungs are not functioning properly and he has been put on ventilator support. His cardiac and renal systems are also not working enough."

The founder member of Communist Party, Jyoti Basu suffered from a severe pneumonia attack on January 1 following which he was admitted to the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU) of the AMRI Hospital in Salt Lake in Kolkata.
