Four-day Doul Holi Mahotsav at Barpeta in Assam begins
A unique four-day celebration of Doul Mahotsav, integral to Holi in Assam, is happening with great fervour and devotion Barpeta's monastery founded by Vaishnav saint Sankardeva's disciple Madhavdeva. For four days the place will resonate with sounds of cymbals and Holi songs dedicated to Lord Krishna.

The image of Krishna, called 'Kaliya Gosain', was carried around the town in a procession as devotees played cymbals and drums, to begin the four day Holi festival.

It is said that more than a lakh of people, including women are likely to visit the monastery to celebrate the festival over four days. It is interesting to note that women are barred from entering the monastery rest of the year, informed an ex-student of mine along with sending a picture of the women celebrating Holi gracefully.

Greeting the people of Assam on the occasion of Holi festival, Governor P B Acharya in a statement wished that Holi would strengthen the secular fabric and foster unity, fraternity, joy, reciprocity and togetherness among the people.

He urged people to go for eco-friendly Holi and spare a thought towards the preservation and promotion of wonderful flora and fauna of the state and prevent their destruction.
