France wins FIFA World Cup title for the second time after beating Croatia by 4-2; Google joins celebrations with a doodle
The FIFA World Cup 2018 came to thrilling and exciting end in Russia with France beating Croatia by 4-2 and lifting the trophy on Sunday. It was the second time that France emerged as champions in the FIFA World Cup.

England's captain Harry Kane won the Golden Boot award while Croatia's captain Luka Modric received the Golden Ball of the tournament.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup was the 21st international football tournament. For the first time the tournament used the video assistant referee (VAR) system.

The tournament is contested by the men's national teams of the member associations of FIFA once every four years. This year the World Cup took place in Russia from 14th June to 15th July.

At an estimated cost of over $14.2 billion, it is the most expensive World Cup ever that involved 32 teams, of which 31 came through qualifying competitions, while the host nation qualified automatically.

Of the 32 teams, 20 had also appeared in the last tournament in 2014, while both Iceland and Panama made their first appearances at a FIFA World Cup. A total of 64 matches were played in 12 venues across 11 cities.

The final took place on 15 July at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, with France and Croatia competing for the World Cup.

At the Luzhniki Stadium, Russian president Vladimir Putin, French president Emanuel Macron and Croatian president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic witnessed the match.

The internet search engine giant also celebrated the final day of the tournament with a doodle stating "World Cup 2018 Champions: France!"
