Free Cleft and Palate Deformity Detection camp at Shrushrusha Hospital
Shrushrusha hospital has organised a camp on November 18, Sunday from 9am to 12 noon, to detect cleft and palate deformity. Cleft lip and palate is the commonest congenital deformity seen in India.
SHRUSHRUSHA HOSPITAL has organised a camp on November 18, Sunday, from 9 to 12 noon, to detect cleft and palate deformity. Cleft lip and palate is the commonest congenital deformity seen in India. The commonest deformities seen are:

  • Cleft lip only (unilateral or bilateral)
  • Cleft lip and palate (unilateral or bilateral)
  • Cleft palate only
  • Cleft lip and palate with other facial anomalies

When a baby is born with any of the above deformities, it should be shown to a plastic and reconstructive surgeon immediately. The plastic surgeon then discusses the matter with the parents and other responsible family members about the pathology of deformity and the line of treatment. He will often assure the parents about complete recovery of the baby. This dialogue helps in gaining confidence and relieving tension in the parents’ mind.

Once the baby is three months old and healthy enough to tolerate general anaesthesia, cleft lip repair is undertaken. In this surgery the orbicularis oris muscle is released to its normal position and repaired along with alignment of all anatomical landmarks of vermillion cupids bow, nostril floor and nose. The baby is hospitalised for three to four days and sutures are removed in five to six days.

The cleft and palate corrective surgery is done on any patient who is from three months to 40 years old. This surgery takes one to two hours, depending on the severity of the deformity. It requires hospital stay of three to four days and the recovery period is of 10 days. The total treatment is free of cost (supported by The Smile Train, New York).

Shushrusha hospital is doing these surgeries for the last one year, and has performed 175 surgeries till date.

The management of cleft lip and palate is a team effort by the plastic surgeon, paediatrician, prosthodontist, orthodontist and speech therapist. If the baby is brought to the team immediately after birth and followed up regularly till the age of 19 years, the team can definitely provide them with better aesthetic and functional results.
