Many senior citizens feel lonely and want to talk to someone or simply need listening to. The Society for Serving Seniors offers PESU - Personalized Ear-lending Services Unlimited over the phone, free of charge, using a group of volunteers.
ONE OF most serious problems of senior citizens is that they feel utterly lonely and left out. They have no one to talk to or listen to them. As they are not gainfully employed they have no routine work to engage them. Apart from a few hours spent in walking, eating, performing Puja etc they do not know what to do with so much time on their hands. They are mobile enough to go to Day Care Centers or clubs. If some volunteers visit them, talk to them at regular intervals that will be a great help.
PESU - What does the service consist of?
Keeping the above in view the Society for Serving Seniors based in Secunderabad has started offering a specialized service to tackle loneliness problems in senior citizens. This is called PESU which stands for “Personalized Ear-lending Services Unlimited”. Here some trained senior citizen volunteer listens to you over the phone at a scheduled time. Listening is neutral, confidential, non-judgmental, unbiased, non-advising and supportive. It involves simple, plain listening with empathy in a language you are comfortable with. You do not need to move out of your house. Our volunteers are just a phone call away. You are not required to learn and apply anything new. No solutions are offered. Plain simple ear-lending service is offered. Senior Citizens may avail themselves of this free service by contacting the society office.
Who are the Volunteers?
The organizers have enlisted the co-operation of many senior citizens who have agreed to volunteer this service. They decide the time for taking calls, put their phone numbers & email addresses in public domain, mention the languages they are comfortable with etc. Many of them know the seriousness of the problem as they are senior citizens themselves. They know what it is to be lonely and craving to be talked to or listened to. Most of them have retired from senior positions in industry, government, military, and consultancies and as independent professionals. They are decent, educated, and polite. Listeners in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, English, Hindi, Malayalam and Konkani are now available. At present nearly fifteen volunteers are available.
