Free press is essential for peace, justice and human rights for all: UN Chief Antonio Guterres
Ahead of World Press Freedom Day established by the United Nations General Assembly, observed on May 3 every year and meant to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression, the UN Chief Antonio Guterres, in his message said, "A free press is essential for peace, justice and human rights for all."

"On World Press Freedom Day 2018, I call on governments to strengthen press freedom, and to protect journalists. Promoting a free press is standing up for our right to truth," he urged.

He added that the free press was crucial to building transparent and democratic societies and keeping those in power accountable and vital for sustainable development.

Lauding the contribution of journalists and media workers who 'shine a light on local and global challenges and tell the stories that need to be told' and calling their 'service to the public is invaluable', Guterres said, "Laws that protect independent journalism, freedom of expression and the right to information need to be adopted, implemented and enforced. Crimes against journalists must be prosecuted."
