French Open: Federer, Serena cruise on opening day; Hewitt, Venus, Petrova exit
As expected, the first round of the French Open witnessed top players such as Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Serena Williams, and Ana Ivanovic making it to the second round of Roland Garos 2013. There were two big surprises with Nadia Petrova and Venus Williams exiting from the singles competition on the first day itself after losing to Monica Puig and Urszula Radwanska respectively.

It was Serena's game, which caught the attention of many as she defeated Georgian Anna Tatishvili 6-0 and 6-1. In the men's competition, it was as usual Roger Federer who showed his skills against Pablo Carreno-Busta, defeating him 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3. It was a good service game by the Swiss, in which he won 83 percent of his first serves, reported Bleacher Report.

Some well known players, like Lleyton Hewitt, and Xavier Malisse lost their matches to Gilles Simon and Milos Raonic respectively.

Some important fixtures on the second day of the competition are Li Na vs. A. Medina Garrigues, Su-Wei Hsieh vs. Maria Sharapova in the women's category. In the men's category, Rafael Nadal vs. Daniel Brands, Tomas Berdych vs. Gael Monfils, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. Aljaz Bedene.

With top players in the fray for the second Grand Slam of the year, there are bound to be some disappointments and surprises along the way. But, big names such as Nadal, Federer, and Serena Williams are always considered to be strong favourites. They need to come up with their A class game in every outing and the player, who shows consistent form in various stages will have a better chance of winning the 2013 French Open crown.

The real test of the players would lie in the business end of the competition (from quarter finals onwards), where only top players would survive and the competition would be a tougher one.
