French police shoot down hammer wielding attacker outside Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris
The media reported that a man attacked a cop with hammer in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Tuesday which had many tourists visiting the landmark in the capital city of France.

It has been further reported that the French police have shot down the attacker and the building and area around it has been evacuated. The police are investigating the incident.

Tourists at the site ran helter-skelter for cover as the attack occurred and gun shots followed. It is said that hundreds of people were at the cathedral when the incident occurred.

According to a CNN report, the man who attacked an officer on Tuesday at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris said, "This is for Syria," French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said.

Collomb also said that the Algerian student who attacked the officer with a hammer was also armed with knives. He also confirmed that the condition of the police officer was not serious.

The attacker was taken to the hospital after being shot in the chest by another officer. The situation, according to CNN, has been brought under control.

The gun shots created panic among tourists that had assembled outside Notre Dame. After the incident, the cathedral building has been locked down, the people have been instructed to stay away from the area.

Many suspect it to be a terrorist incident. However, things will get clear after completion of investigations by the French anti-terrorist prosecutors.

It may be recalled that France has been in a state of emergency since the attacks by the jihadists in Paris in November 2015 which had left 130 people dead.
