Friendship Day on August 4: Where has gone friendship as noble and valuable sentiment!
The first Sunday of August, this year it fell on August 4, is observed as Friendship Day, and it is quite popular among the youth including teenagers. Greetings and friendship bands are exchanged on this day to express the feeling of friendship. However, the markets and technology have commercialised the event and sentimental value of the observance has got lost.

The social observance of Friendship Day, which for adults and oldies has got limited to social media, comes close on the heels of the International Day of Friendship celebrated on July 30.

International Day of Friendship established in 2011 and coordinated by UNESCO, is going to be for promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence through education. The aim is that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. "If children learn to live together in peace and harmony that will contribute to the strengthening of international peace and cooperation," states UNESCO.

According to the UN, the International Day of Friendship is also based on the recognition of the relevance and importance of friendship as a noble and valuable sentiment in the lives of human beings around the world.

"Through friendship ? by accumulating bonds of camaraderie and developing strong ties of trust ? we can contribute to the fundamental shifts that are urgently needed to achieve lasting stability, weave a safety net that will protect us all, and generate passion for a better world where all are united for the greater good," stated UNESCO website.
